Is Santa real?

So one of my sisters has 3 kids and has always been flat out honest with them about things like Santa Clause and the Tooth fairy and characters like that. While my other sister currently has 8 kids waits till they are of a certain age before she lets them know. And is sure to explain to them that it is a secret and they are not to talk about it to other people (for protection to those kids that still believe.) Both sisters are doing what is right for their family. Teach as you may want. Well the sister with the 8 kids has had an issue with her just turned 5 year old about asking if Santa is real. She has avoided answering up until a few days ago. She has finally told her the "secret" about Santa. I remarked that I could not have that conversation with Katie because she has such a big mouth. That same day I found a present for Hugh while shopping with Katie and Leo. When we got home I was going to tell Hugh that I bought him a present. So I first asked Katie if she remembered what we bought. She eventually did remember and I told her not to say anything. BIG MISTAKE! I proceeded to tell Hugh that I got him a present and Katie spits out "We didn't get you the Yoda!" As I sat there and gave her the "what for" look she then very innocently says "I think I just told you." I love her to death but she just can't keep a secret.

Yet another story...

So a couple of nights ago I had put the kids to bed and waited until I was sure they were asleep before I got the presents from the basement and put them on the table to be wrapped. As Hugh and I were admiring the toys and picturing what fun our dearest children would have playing with them we were discussing which ones would be from Santa.

Now my thoughts on that is: why are we giving some strange guy in a red suit all the credit for fun gifts. Hugh wanted Katie's camera (one of her presents) to be from Santa. "WHY?? I am the one that should be getting the hugs and kisses for such a great toy!! Not Santa." So I had decided lats year that the cheapest toy and one that is not necessarily going to be the thrill of the day is the ONE and ONLY ONE from Santa. (Call me cheap) All the rest are going to be from her dear parents.

So Hugh was eating dinner and I was looking at a toy and Hugh all of the sudden starts to say "Mommy.... Mommy" Over and over. So I look up at him with mu back turned to the rest of my house "What!?!"And he points over my shoulder and says "Mommy" yet again.

Katie had gotten out of bed and came to the dining room. As I whipped her around and escorted her back to bed she says with a grin "I saw the presents." I say "go to sleep! Do not get up again!" I go back to the dining room and Hugh says "Well we know which ones aren't from Santa."

Well that's going to be a problem because ALL the presents I had gotten for Leo were out. I still had 2 presents for Katie hidden. One of which was the present from Santa (a doll) and the camera that is going to be the most exciting thing for her on Christmas morning.

She then calls me from her room. I go back there to see what she wants.

She says "I didn't see the kitchen."

I keep my cool knowing exactly what she is talking about... "What Kitchen?"

There is a little saddness and worry in her voice this time "The Littlest Pet Shop Kitchen." Which is the only other present she has been asking for since she say it in Wal-mart like 6 months ago.

Now that had been one of the items on the table. AND SHE DIDN'T SEE IT!!!! HOORAY!!!

I can't wait till I am done playing the Santa charade.

Well we have that problem here too. Rachele can not keep her mouth shut. We have not told her who santa is yet but in my family growing up if we did not believe in the theory of santa we did not get gifts so I think we will tell her the truth when the time comes. My sister told my nephew a few years ago about santa and he had to tell Rachele santa wasn't real but my sister stepped in and said the ones at the malls are not real and that they are his helpers and then pulled him aside and told him not to tell others because some people are told that he is real. She only told him because he goes snooping and found his santa gift so she told him to make him feel bad and it back fired. He has snooped every year and has found his gift every year so I thnik she should trick him but that is just me.

I can totally see me reacting the same way with Sarah as you did with Katie. :o) I love the way you look at it with Santa always gives the best gifts. Tom and I have very different opinions about which presents come from Santa and Mom and Dad. He grew up in a home where ALL the presents came from Santa. Where is the opportunity to teach your kids to say "thank you" when the person who gave it to you doesn't really exsist. We are still undecided but need to make a firm decision this year since Sarah is now at a point where it will matter. And don't even get me started on "Santa delivering gifts to grandma and grandpa's house"...oh I could go on!!
